Large-scale civil engineering structures and industrial facilities generally have reinforced foundations. This is because the foundation reinforcement rods, foundation slabs and external walls below the ground surface provide an excellent earth hold at the bottom of the excavation. This method provides a good ground connection at low cost. An additional equipotential mesh, connected to the reinforcement and external down conductors , or to the structural elements used as such, is recommended to ensure reliable connections.
