Photovoltaic energy in France
Evolution of photovoltaic electricity production
The proportion of photovoltaic in the French energy market started to grow strongly from 2009, reaching 13.6TWh in 2020, with an overall efficiency of 15 to 19% of the installed capacity.
Self-consumption has also developed to reach 116 GWh in 2019.
The strongest development for the photovoltaic market in France was in 2011, with an addition of about 1700MW (15TWh) of capacity to the existing park. Since 2017 this capacity increase has stabilized around 900MW (7.8TWh).
In 2020, photovoltaic energy held the 7th position in the consumption of renewable energy, representing 4.1% of renewable energy and 2.5% of total energy produced in France.
Distribution of the photovoltaic park
Photovoltaic installations with a power of less than 3KW represented 69% of the park for 9% of the electrical capacity, while stations with a power of more than 250 KW represented 1% of the French photovoltaic park for 53% of the production.
New Aquitaine is the leading French producer of photovoltaic energy with 2455MW of capacity, followed by Occitania (2017 MW) and the PACA region (1334 MW).

Photovoltaics in the world
Between 2018 and 2019, the global PV installed base grew by 12% to reach a total of 627 GW for 2.1% of global electricity generation shares.
In 2018 China was the world's largest producer of photovoltaic electricity with 176.9 TWh, or 32% of global production. Followed by the USA (81.2 TWh) and Japan (62.6 TWh). France remained in the top 10 with 10.5 TWh.
The share of photovoltaics in electricity production was 2.1%. It is worth noting the exceptional share of photovoltaic energy in Germany and Italy, where it exceeds 7% of the national production.
